“Thanks for laying out my clothes! Didn’t know Dom would keep me so late,” I yelled as I limped into the bath back at Rapier Place. My current clothing hit the rug in the tiled room. I sat only long enough to undo my leg brace and slip into my flip-flops, ones with platforms to help with balance in the slick shower.

Five minutes later, I was out with my hair in a towel, redoing my makeup. Chaz waited in the master bedroom, his wheelchair rolled up to the desk where he sat working on his laptop. His voice drifted into the bath.

“Do I look okay for meeting the illustrious Mrs. Twist?”

“I didn’t pay attention as I ran in. Dom pushed me right to the time limit with his questions. Sorry. I’ll look in a moment.”

Once my makeup was mostly done, I tapped my cane to get it into wand form. Blow-dry spell took care of my curly red hair in under a minute. One of the benefits of being fae.

I paused in the bedroom. Chaz turned and wheeled himself back for me to see his outfit. Khaki chinos, a black mock neck shirt, and black blazer completed his ensemble.

“Good enough for my mother.” I limped to the bed and worked on getting my own clothes on. Black dress. My dark dressy shoes. I avoided thin heels, but wedges worked for stability with my leg. This pair was only about an inch high. I didn’t need to impress my mother, only keep her from finding something to pick at. Not dressing appropriately for dinner at the club was one grump I didn’t want to have her make.

“You’re driving, right?” I didn’t bother to look at Chaz as I headed to the walk-in closet for jewelry. Again, nothing pretentious. Just enough that Mom wouldn’t complain I was underdressed for the club.

“Sure.” Chaz’s voice started off chipper but then took on a darker tone. “I feel like I’m driving to my trial before the dating court.”

He need not have worried… too much.

The St. Maurice Country Club was warded against mundane visitors after six each evening. All members knew any mundane visitors needed to be gone before the wards drove them off.

Dad met us at the curb and opened the passenger door of Chaz’s sports car for me. Another pixie in tiny form flitted just over Dad’s shoulder and darted over to Chaz’s side. There he popped tall and unlatched Chaz’s door.

“Your mother is in the powder room, checking her hair for the fifteenth time. I figured the valet would save some time.”

“And cut down on Mom’s snide remarks as she watched us go slow across the lot.” I smiled to show I was teasing. Mostly. Mother muttered under her breath occasionally.

“Didn’t see any mundanes hiking back to St. Mo,” I told Dad after I hugged him.

“Most of the members are good about getting their mundane visitors out before the wards pop. We’ve avoided losing any mundanes this season.”

“Is that normally a problem?” Chaz shook his miniature wheelchair and sent a surge of magic into it.
